Adult ADHD Assessment & Diagnosis
If you’ve started wondering whether ADHD might explain some of the things you’ve struggled with for years, a professional adult ADHD assessment can help you get a clearer answer.
For many adults, the question builds gradually. You might constantly lose track of things, struggle to start or finish tasks, underestimate how long things will take, zone out during conversations or feel overwhelmed by everyday organisation and admin.
You may have found ways to compensate over the years, but keeping everything together can still take an enormous amount of effort.
At Psych Sami, adult ADHD assessments are conducted by registered psychologists who take the time to understand your experiences, history and the impact these difficulties are having on your life.
ADHD can also overlap with anxiety, depression, burnout, trauma, stress and other concerns. A professional assessment helps look at the whole picture rather than relying on a checklist or online ADHD test alone.
What an Adult ADHD Assessment Involves
-
Confidential Video Consultation
Your first appointment is a private 50-minute video consultation with a registered psychologist.
You’ll talk about what has been happening, the difficulties you’ve noticed and what has led you to seek an ADHD assessment now.
Your psychologist may explore areas such as attention, organisation, time management, motivation, impulsivity, emotional regulation, work, study, relationships and everyday routines.
Because ADHD begins earlier in life, they may also ask about your childhood, school experiences, family history and whether similar patterns have been present for a long time.
-
Discussion of your experiences
You don’t need to arrive with a perfectly organised list of symptoms or be certain that ADHD is the answer.
In fact, many adults seek an assessment precisely because they have spent years struggling to understand why certain things seem harder for them than they do for other people.
You’ll have space to talk through your experiences in your own words. Your psychologist can then ask more specific questions to understand the patterns behind them and how much they are affecting different parts of your life.
The aim is not simply to find ADHD traits. It is to understand whether ADHD provides the best explanation for what you have been experiencing.
-
Use of validated assessment tool/s
Your psychologist may use validated questionnaires, screeners or other assessment tools as part of the process.
These can provide useful information about ADHD symptoms and executive functioning, but they are not used in isolation.
Your psychologist will consider the results alongside your clinical consultation, developmental history, current circumstances and any other factors that may be contributing to your difficulties.
This is an important distinction between a professional ADHD assessment and completing a quick self-test online.
-
Feedback and recommendations
Once the assessment is complete, your psychologist will talk you through the findings and explain what they mean in straightforward language.
They’ll discuss whether your presentation appears consistent with Adult ADHD, whether another condition or combination of factors may better explain what you are experiencing, and what your next steps could be.
Recommendations may include psychological therapy, practical strategies for managing ADHD and executive functioning, further assessment or referral to another health professional.
If medication is something you would like to explore, your psychologist can discuss referral options with you. ADHD medication must be prescribed by an appropriately qualified medical practitioner.
FAQs about Adult ADHD assessments
-
An assessment may be worth considering if difficulties with attention, organisation, time management, impulsivity or completing tasks are consistently affecting your everyday life.
You might lose things regularly, forget appointments, procrastinate even when something is important, become intensely focused on certain tasks while struggling to start others, or feel as though basic organisation requires far more effort than it should.
Some adults reach this point after recognising ADHD traits in themselves. Others begin wondering about ADHD after a family member is diagnosed, problems become harder to manage at work or home, or the strategies they have relied on for years stop being enough.
You don’t need to diagnose yourself before booking. The purpose of the assessment is to work out whether ADHD may be part of the picture.
-
No.
Online ADHD quizzes and screening tools can be useful for recognising possible traits, but a high score does not necessarily mean you have ADHD.
There can be significant overlap between ADHD symptoms and concerns such as anxiety, depression, trauma, chronic stress, sleep problems and burnout.
A professional assessment allows a psychologist to explore your symptoms in context, look at how long they have been present and consider whether ADHD or something else provides the best explanation.
Screening tools may form part of the assessment, but they do not replace clinical judgement.
-
Adult ADHD assessments are available by video consultation, allowing you to complete the clinical appointments privately from home.
This can make the process more accessible and remove some of the additional organisation involved in travelling to appointments.
The consultation being online does not mean the assessment is an automated or self-guided process. You are meeting directly with a registered psychologist who will guide the assessment, ask follow-up questions and interpret the information gathered.
-
After the assessment, your psychologist will explain the findings and what they may mean for you.
If ADHD appears to be part of the picture, you may discuss strategies for managing attention, organisation, executive functioning or emotional regulation.
Other recommendations could include psychological therapy, further assessment or referral to another health professional.
If the assessment suggests that something other than ADHD may better explain your difficulties, your psychologist will also talk you through that and help you understand what the next step may be.
The aim is to give you useful clarity, rather than simply handing you a score or label.
-
Most Adult ADHD assessments take place over two to three sessions, with each appointment usually lasting around 50 minutes.
The process may include clinical interviews, discussion of your developmental history, validated assessment tools and a feedback session.
If additional information is required to reach a clear conclusion, your psychologist will explain what is needed and why.
-
Where clinically appropriate, your psychologist may be able to provide a formal diagnosis and written psychological report.
A written report may involve an additional fee depending on what is required.
Some people seek an ADHD assessment primarily for personal understanding, while others may require documentation for work, study, ongoing healthcare or support planning.
If your main goal is to explore ADHD medication, it is important to understand that psychologists do not prescribe ADHD medication. You will need to see an appropriately qualified medical practitioner for prescribing.
