Online Adult ADHD assessment

If you’ve started wondering whether ADHD might explain some of the things you’ve been struggling with, an online Adult ADHD assessment can be a useful place to start.

For many adults, the question does not come out of nowhere. It might be years of losing track of things, feeling behind, struggling to start tasks, zoning out in conversations, or feeling overwhelmed by everyday admin that other people seem to manage more easily.

Sometimes ADHD is the right explanation. Sometimes anxiety, depression, burnout, trauma, stress, or other factors are also part of the picture. The assessment is there to help sort through that properly.

What an Online Adult ADHD Assessment Involves

  • Confidential Video Consultation

Your first session is a private 50-minute video appointment with a registered psychologist. You’ll talk through what has been happening, what you’ve noticed over time, and what made you decide to seek an assessment now.

Your psychologist may ask about focus, organisation, time management, motivation, impulsivity, emotional ups and downs, work, study, relationships and daily routines. They may also ask about childhood, school, family history, and whether these difficulties have been present for a long time.

  • Discussion of your experiences

You do not need to explain everything perfectly. A lot of adults seeking an ADHD assessment already feel frustrated that they cannot quite put the problem into words. That is okay. The session is there to help unpack it.

  • Use of validated assessment tool/s

Your psychologist may also use questionnaires or screeners as part of the assessment. These help add detail to the conversation and look at whether your experiences fit with Adult ADHD, or whether something else may be contributing.

The tools are completed securely online. They are not the whole assessment, but they can help your psychologist build a better picture of what is going on.

  • Feedback and recommendations

Once the assessment is complete, your psychologist will talk you through the findings. They’ll explain whether your symptoms appear to fit with Adult ADHD, whether other factors may also be involved, and what the next step could be.

A few different things might come out of the assessment. You might talk about therapy, ways to manage ADHD day to day, or whether another assessment would be useful. If medication is something you want to look into, your psychologist can talk with you about a referral, but prescribing medication sits with a doctor or psychiatrist.

FAQs about online Adult ADHD assessments

  • An Adult ADHD assessment may be worth considering if life often feels harder to manage than it seems to for other people.

Maybe you lose track of time, forget things you meant to do, struggle to start tasks, or feel buried under basic planning and admin. You might miss details, act before thinking, feel restless, or find that motivation comes and goes in a way that is hard to explain.

Some adults describe it as always feeling behind, even when they are trying hard. Others have spent years being told they are careless, lazy, messy, too emotional, or not reaching their potential.

An assessment can help you understand whether ADHD may be part of this, or whether another issue is better explaining what you are experiencing.

  • An online assessment can be easier to manage if getting to an appointment is another thing on an already full list.

You can attend from home, avoid travel, and choose a space where you feel more settled. For some adults with ADHD traits, that can make the process feel less stressful and easier to follow through with.

The assessment itself is still structured. Your psychologist will guide the session, ask the questions they need to ask, and use screeners or assessment tools where they are helpful.

  • After the assessment, you will be given feedback about what came up.

Your psychologist will explain the results in normal language and talk through what they may mean for you. They may suggest therapy, practical strategies, further assessment, or a referral for medical or psychiatric review.

The aim is to help you leave with a better understanding of what has been happening, not just another list of things you should be doing.

  • Online ADHD assessments are not automatically more accurate than in-person assessments.

For many people, both options can work well. What matters is that the assessment is done properly, that the right information is gathered, and that you feel able to speak honestly.

Some people prefer sitting in the room with a psychologist. Others find it easier to talk from home. If your psychologist thinks another type of assessment or referral is needed, they will let you know.

  • Most Adult ADHD assessments take place over two to three sessions. Each session usually runs for 50 minutes.

The process may include discussion, screeners, clinical assessment and feedback. If more information is needed, your psychologist will explain why and talk you through what happens next.

  • If appropriate, your psychologist may be able to provide a formal diagnosis or written report. A written report may attract an additional fee.

Some people want an assessment for personal understanding. Others need documentation for work, study, ongoing care or support planning. If your main goal is medication, it is important to know that psychologists cannot prescribe ADHD medication. You will need to see a psychiatrist or appropriate medical practitioner for that.

  • Your assessment will be completed by a registered psychologist with experience in Adult ADHD, executive functioning and related concerns.

They will talk you through the process, explain what they are looking at, and help you understand the results without making the experience feel more overwhelming than it needs to be.

  • To book, choose a time through the online booking system. Once your appointment is confirmed, you’ll receive a short intake form to complete before your session. After that, your psychologist will guide you through the rest.
